Frequently Asked Questions

What is MinuteFlower?

MinuteFlower is a charitable giving platform for iPhone that allows you to donate the money you earn during specific moments of your day. We do this by allowing you to donate in terms of hours and minutes rather than dollars and cents.

How does MinuteFlower work?

MinuteFlower uses an optional salary range to suggest a minute-value (how much you earn during one minute of your day).  Once you've confirmed your minute-value, you can donate parts of your day - like a coffee break - to a non-profit.  For example, if you earn $30/hr, your minute-value is $0.50. When you donate a 10-minute coffee break, $5 will be sent to the charity you've selected.

Why time-based giving?

Time-based giving creates a new psychology behind charitable giving: instead of experiencing an emotional reward at a few discrete times (i.e. time of donation, receipt of thank-you letter, when filing taxes, etc.), you will now experience the emotional reward over a prolonged period of time, enabling you to 'feel' the donation as it's happening. This will allow you to mentally connect your time at work to your charitable donation.

Are my donations tax-deductible?

Because you are donating to 501(c)3 organizations, your donations are tax-deductible.  MinuteFlower provides you with two ways to obtain receipts of your donations: from within the app and emailed receipts.

How much of my donation goes to the charity?

To fund MinuteFlower's mission of energizing and enabling professionals to give to non-profits, MinuteFlower will charge a 3% operations fee for each donation.  PayPal charges 2.9% + $.30 for each transaction.

Do I have to have a PayPal account to use MinuteFlower?

Currently PayPal is the only payment method we support, so a PayPal account is necessary to donate with MinuteFlower.  We are working on adding other payment methods.

How do you select featured charities?

Most of our featured charities have been vetted by Philanthropedia, a non-profit organization that vets and evaluates 501(c)3 organizations. Because the process of evaluating charities is time-consuming and resource-intensive, not all of charities we feature have been vetted by Philanthropedia.  In those cases, we use other non-profit evaluation organizations like GiveWell to select the most impactful organizations in a given category.

Does MinuteFlower protect my privacy?

MinuteFlower will never sell or use your information without your permission.

Will MinuteFlower know my credit card or PayPal information?

Because PayPal is a separate organization from MinuteFlower, MinuteFlower will never gain your credit card or PayPal information.

What about Android and web?

We are working on developing both a web-based application and an Android application and will let you know as soon as they're available.
